Looking back on the 2023 legislative session, we are filled with pride and excitement as we reflect on the progress we made together in the Roundhouse this year. Our coalition of community advocates, healthcare providers, business owners, policy experts, and other key supporters worked tirelessly to move New Mexico toward a more affordable healthcare system. From calls and messages to legislators, to the more than 70 supporters who traveled across the state for our Day of Action in Santa Fe, our big wins on Medicaid Forward and the Healthcare Affordability Fund are thanks to you.
More than 70 supporters of our campaign gathered at the Roundhouse for our Day of Action.
Medicaid Forward legislation passed through the House and Senate with bipartisan support and has been signed into law by Governor Lujan Grisham. This legislation will now direct the Human Services Department to study and design a Medicaid Forward future. This innovative solution will use existing federal law to lift Medicaid’s income limit, allowing New Mexicans who don’t currently qualify for Medicaid to instead purchase affordable coverage through Medicaid. This is the affordable option our family, friends, and communities deserve.
NMT4HC supporters and partners hold a press conference at the Roundhouse.
We also fought to protect the Healthcare Affordability Fund. This year, the legislature passed plans to ensure the Fund is used to make healthcare more affordable for those on the Exchange, small businesses, Native Americans, and immigrant members of our communities. Along with Medicaid Forward, these two victories will bring down the cost of care for residents across the state.
We’d like to thank all those who rallied with us across the state as we organized to build a healthier and wealthier New Mexico. Your efforts made the difference. This hard work has made a real impact on the lives of thousands of New Mexicans—and we’re just getting started.
In the months ahead, we will keep you up to date as we monitor the state’s progress on implementing these legislative wins. If you haven’t yet, show your support for affordable healthcare for ALL New Mexicans by signing our Healthcare Affordability Pledge.
