Now more than ever, we all need access to quality, affordable healthcare coverage.
In the midst of a pandemic, 214,000 New Mexicans remain uninsured and many patients—uninsured and insured alike—are burdened with devastating medical debt.
NM Together for Healthcare is championing four bills this Legislative Session that, if passed, would bring us closer to ensuring all New Mexicans get the medical care they need without having to worry if it will crush them financially.
Join us in making your voice heard with legislators about the importance of these bills for all New Mexicans.
Keep an eye out for emails from us at crucial junctures and follow us on social media. We will be asking for your help to call and email our legislators at crucial moments.
Bill descriptions
H.B. 122: The Healthcare Affordability Fund Act will raise over $110 million in revenue that can be used to fund healthcare initiatives to (1) reduce healthcare costs for New Mexicans who currently receive coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and (2) expand coverage to New Mexicans who cannot receive coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
H.B. 112: The Non-Discrimination in State and Local Healthcare Programs Act will stop state and local healthcare programs—like the county and hospital indigent care program, which pays some healthcare costs for low-income residents—from discriminating against residents on the basis of immigration status.
S.B. 71: The Patients’ Debt Collection Protect Act will protect patients from ruinous medical debt and aggressive debt collection practices by (1) stopping hospitals from sending low-income patients to collections or suing them, (2) stopping price discrimination against uninsured patients, and (3) requiring hospitals to screen uninsured patients for eligibility for insurance or public programs.
H.B. 13: The Emergency Medicaid Act will ensure lower-income, uninsured New Mexican immigrant residents can receive COVID-19 testing, treatment, and vaccines without worrying about facing exorbitant bills.
