New Mexico has an important opportunity to bring down the costs of health care, but the Legislature must act now. Call senators TODAY and ask them to stand up for New Mexican families and pass HB 278. There are only three days left in session, but the bill only has one more committee left and may be heard as soon as TONIGHT.
We can do this!!!
It’s critical we show our support because health insurance companies opposing this bill are making phone calls to senate finance committee members now.
These companies were paying a 3% fee to the federal government that was recently repealed by Congress. They will simply walk away with a windfall of profits unless New Mexico steps into collect the fee and ensure it is used to drive down health care costs through a Health Care Affordability Fund. Insurance companies have never paid their fair share and are aggressively lobbying against it because they want millions of dollars in tax breaks.
If we don’t act now, New Mexico will miss out on collecting over $125 million per year to drive down the costs of health care.
There are over 190,000 uninsured New Mexicans. Health care costs are rising and unsustainable. Our state can’t afford to continue to let minor health problems become emergencies because people can’t access care.
Please make your calls today to senate finance committee members and ask them to please support HB 278 to bring $125 million to New Mexico for affordable health care instead of giving insurance companies tax breaks.
